Just like humans, dogs are more likely to develop health issues as they enter their golden years. Generally, big dogs are considered seniors at age eight, medium-sized dogs reach this status at age ten, and small dogs enter seniorhood at eleven. At Animal General Hospital, our local veterinarian staff specializes in providing care for older pets. Here’s a look at some of the common health problems experienced by senior dogs.
Cancer
Nearly half of dogs over ten develop some form of cancer. If your dog has any strange growths, it’s best to get them checked out. With early detection, the prognosis is often better. Other signs of cancer in dogs include weight loss and loss of appetite.
Vision/Hearing Loss
In older dogs, cataracts are quite common. With cataracts, a foggy layer over the lens makes it harder for the dog to be able to see clearly. This may even lead to total blindness. And as dogs age, their hearing can decline, which makes it important to periodically clean out their ears so that the effects of hearing loss are mitigated.
Joint Pain
Older dogs are commonly afflicted with osteoarthritis, which causes cartilage loss in joints, leading to significant pain and discomfort. There’s no cure for osteoarthritis, but our vet clinic offers treatments that can provide substantial relief.
Dementia
As dogs age, they are at greater risk of dementia. Signs of canine dementia include disorientation, getting lost, and barking for seemingly no reason. Medications are available to help offset dementia symptoms.
Heart Problems
Senior dogs often develop heart disease, signs of which include coughing, strained breathing, and low energy. With congestive heart failure, fluid may back up into the heart and lungs, causing serious health issues.
